uwwoe is not affiliated with the University of Waterloo. This is not a disclaimer footnote — it is a load-bearing design constraint.

What this means in practice

  • Quest is authoritative. Your registration, your transcripts, your official credential progression all live in Quest. If Quest and uwwoe disagree about whether you have met a requirement, Quest is right.
  • Your advisor is authoritative. Program-specific overrides, transfer credit decisions, substitutions, and policy exceptions are decided by your academic advisor, not by uwwoe. If uwwoe says a course is missing but your advisor has approved a substitution, the substitution stands.
  • uwwoe is an exploration tool. Use it to ask “what would this look like?”, “what am I close to?”, “what would unlock if I took X?”. Do not use it as the final word on what to register for.

When to trust uwwoe

You can rely on uwwoe for:

  • Reading the catalog. Every course detail, credential requirement, and prerequisite expression in uwwoe is derived from the public Kuali catalog with a click-through source reference. If the Kuali catalog is right, uwwoe is right.
  • Walking the graph. “What are the prerequisites of MATH 247?”, “what courses list CS 246 as a prerequisite?”, “what credentials require ECON 102?” — these are mechanical graph traversals over published data.
  • Spotting conflicts. uwwoe flags antirequisite collisions and duplicate-credit issues against your plan as conflict statuses, with source references attached.

When to stop and ask Quest

Stop and ask Quest or your advisor when:

  • uwwoe says unknown on a requirement you need to evaluate. unknown means uwwoe could not resolve the requirement — opaque parser fragment, missing data, or a rule outside its taxonomy. It does not mean the requirement is met or unmet. See Status meanings.
  • uwwoe says conflict and you don’t understand why. Conflicts can reflect real antirequisite issues, or they can be artifacts of stale catalog data. Verify in Quest.
  • The course you care about is from a faculty not currently indexed. uwwoe’s current coverage is Math + engineering-support subjects — see Scope and coverage.
  • You are deciding whether to register. uwwoe is exploratory; the registration decision is final and consequential.

What uwwoe will never do

  • Register you for a course. uwwoe has no Quest integration.
  • Promise that “you will graduate” or “you will not graduate”. uwwoe reports what the catalog says about a specific state; it does not predict approvals, transfers, or future catalog changes.
  • Replace academic counseling. Real advising deals with motivation, workload, mental health, financial aid, and many things uwwoe knows nothing about.

The license binds this

The repository’s LICENSE file carries an explicit advisory-only notice that is binding alongside the MIT terms. If you build on uwwoe, you inherit this constraint.
